After a July that PC Gamer politely called "a little light on big releases," the month is closing with its biggest swing: Halo: Campaign Evolved launches July 28 on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC. It is a full rebuild of the game that made the franchise, with updated visuals, rebuilt systems, and Master Chief's first outing on PlayStation hardware. Here is what is actually changing and where to play it.
What "Campaign Evolved" Actually Means
This is not a remaster with a resolution bump. It is a ground-up rebuild of the original Combat Evolved campaign, in the same spirit as recent rebuilds of other franchise classics. Expect modernized lighting and geometry, reworked encounter pacing for current-gen hardware, and quality-of-life systems that the 2001 original never had. The core campaign beats are intact, from the Pillar of Autumn to the Silent Cartographer to the first sight of the Halo ring. The execution around them is not.
The Real Headline: It's on PlayStation

Halo has been an Xbox exclusive for nearly 25 years. Campaign Evolved landing day-one on PS5 alongside Xbox Series X|S and PC is the more significant story than the remake itself, a continuation of Microsoft's platform strategy that has already put Game Pass titles on rival hardware. For PlayStation-only players, this is the first legitimate chance to play the game that defined a console war from the other side of it.
Where It Sits in a Suddenly Crowded Month
July looked quiet until it wasn't. Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced released July 9, Palworld hit 1.0 on July 10, and now Halo closes the month on the 28th. That is three major releases inside three weeks, right before things go quiet again ahead of a genuinely stacked September and November. How to Play It
| Platform | Best Route In |
|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Included Day One with Game Pass Ultimate, no separate purchase needed |
| PlayStation 5 | Standalone purchase, no PS Plus tier includes it at launch |
| PC | Standalone purchase; also included in PC Game Pass |
If you already have an Xbox Series S and a Game Pass subscription, this is effectively a free launch-day release. Everyone else is looking at a standalone buy, and it is worth remembering that the Xbox Series X price jumps to $799.99 on August 1, so hardware shoppers have a four-day window to buy in at the current $649.99 before this becomes a more expensive way to play it. Update, August 2: that window has closed, and the Series X is now $799.99. See our breakdown of the new pricing.
Update, August 2: How It Actually Landed
Campaign Evolved has been out for five days, and the reception splits sharply by platform. Critics broadly liked it. Players are considerably harder on it. And the gap between those two groups is the real story.
| Platform | Metacritic | Critic Reviews | The Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | 84 | 33 | Best version. Runs as intended, no major caveats |
| PlayStation 5 | 80 | 53 | Strong on PS5 Pro; framerate instability in performance mode on base PS5 |
| PC | 77 | 25 | Persistent stuttering plus the always-online requirement |
That works out to an 81 Metacritic average overall, with OpenCritic sitting around 82. Respectable numbers in isolation, but they carry an unflattering distinction: this is now the lowest-rated Halo game ever released, slipping below Halo 3: ODST, which had held that spot at 83 for over a decade.
The Player Reception Is a Different Story
Where critics landed in the low 80s, players did not. On Steam the game sits at a Mixed 63% positive, and the Metacritic user score on PS5 is 5.8 across roughly 370 user reviews. OpenCritic has flagged the title as actively review bombed, so treat the very lowest user numbers with some caution. The complaints driving it are consistent and specific:
- The always-online requirement. This is the big one. A single-player campaign remake that demands a live connection and a Microsoft account sign-in drew heavy criticism, and launch-week authentication failures turned that irritation into organised backlash.
- PC performance. Stuttering has been widely reported and is the clearest reason the PC score trails the console versions by seven points.
- The new prequel missions. Operation: METEORITE, the three-mission arc built for this release, has landed poorly with a meaningful share of players.
- Cutscene direction and voice performances compared against the 2001 original, which is a tough comparison for any remake to win.
- No multiplayer at this price point, which remains a recurring theme in negative reviews.
Commercially, none of that has slowed it down much. Campaign Evolved was the top-selling premium game on Steam globally at launch and peaked above 25,000 concurrent Steam players on day one, healthy for a single-player campaign with no multiplayer component.
So Which Version Should You Buy?
The recommendation from our preview holds, but with sharper edges now that the numbers are in:
- On Xbox, it is an easy yes, especially since it is included with Game Pass at no extra cost. This is the version critics scored highest and the one with the fewest asterisks.
- On PS5 Pro it holds up well. On a base PS5, go in expecting performance-mode framerate wobble, and consider quality mode instead.
- On PC, wait. The stuttering is a patchable problem and Halo Studios has every reason to fix it, but at 77 with an unresolved always-online requirement, there is no urgency to buy at full price this week.
Should You Play It Even If You've Played the Original?
If your only exposure to Combat Evolved was on original Xbox hardware or through the Master Chief Collection, Campaign Evolved is close enough to a new game to justify a replay, because the pacing and encounter design changes are substantial, not cosmetic. If you replayed it recently via backwards compatibility, temper expectations: the bones of the level design are unchanged, so surprises will be in execution rather than content.
